"Rebellion" - Brian Gleeson stars in new TV series

2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, and there will be many commemorative events going on around the time of the Gleeson Clan Gathering.

RTE are currently showing a five-part dramatisation of the events, starring Brian Gleeson in the role of Jimmy Mahon, one of the organisers of the Irish Volunteers. "Rebellion" is not to be missed and promises to be one of the television highlights of the year. It begins with the outbreak of World War One and moves between Dublin, Belfast & London as it follows the events of Easter Week 1916 and its aftermath.

In an article on the Irish Independent website, Brian described filming the dramatic 1916 action scenes as "harrowing". The second episode of the TV series recreated the shooting of Constable James O'Brien, who was on duty at the Cork Hill entrance of Dublin Castle.
"We replicated the shooting of the constable in the exact location where it happened," he said.
"Scenes like that could be pretty emotional. The real constable lost his life there, and the cast and crew took it very seriously.

"Action scenes like this are going to be pretty harrowing - that's down to our incredible director, Aku Louhimies," he said.

"He established a sense of organised chaos for the big fight scenes, and he pushed and pushed us until we were practically weeping and could barely lift up a rifle, let alone fire it.

"Hopefully, you saw that sweat and toil on the screen and in our faces," he added.

Rebellion airs on Sundays at 9.30pm on RTE One, and is available for viewing afterwards on RTE Player for those living in Ireland. The series is set to première on SundanceTV in the US with a broadcast date yet to be confirmed.
